GOP Shamefully Uses Tax Bill to Ram Through Anti-Choice Agenda

For Immediate Release: December 20, 2018

After the House of Representatives voted to pass their tax plan, which includes ideological “personhood” language that has failed in the past, NARAL Pro-Choice America Vice President Adrienne Kimmell issued the following statement:

“Let’s be crystal clear what is happening, the anti-choice Republican Party is using its final hours in the majority to try to ram through a policy and an agenda that is wholly out of step and out of touch. An agenda that voters overwhelming rejected just last month. By sneaking dangerous ‘personhood’ language in the tax bill, Republicans are attempting to fool and mislead Americans. No matter how desperate they are to trick us, we know the truth: women and families need affordable college, not a bait and switch that is one more step on the way to banning abortion. There is no reason for politicians to use the tax code to impose their definition of when life begins onto Americans. This shady tactic, which directly undermines the will of the voters, speaks volumes about their values, and shows just how low their party has sunk.”

This is the GOP’s latest attempt to advance their anti-choice agenda through dangerous “personhood” language, a tactic that voters reject handily. The majority of Americans resoundingly do not support “personhood” language, including a strong plurality of Republicans (48%). As the anti-choice GOP continues to use backdoor tactics to roll back our fundamental rights, polling shows that voters are overwhelmingly with us.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
