NEW: NARAL President Weighs in on Women Candidates in 2020

For Immediate Release: January 16, 2019

As the race to take back the Oval Office in 2020 is officially upon us (including with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announcing her run last night), NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue tackles the question of “can a woman really win?”, offers thoughts on the role of misogyny in this election, and gives perspective on how 2020 is different from 2016.

The full piece, “Let’s Talk about 2020 Women” can be found here.

Yes a woman can become president. But whether one will have a fair shot at trying is up to us.

The sheer number of women in the field — historic in and of itself– will make it harder to conflate gender with any one individual, and just as men have been judged since the beginning of time on their individual merits, so too will Americans be forced to grapple with publicly acknowledging that women are not a monolith — we have different leadership styles, unique ideas, diverse core values, and varying approaches.

Let’s commit to remember that a woman candidate has already won 3 million more votes than the current occupant of the Oval Office and lost the Electoral College vote by fewer people than can fit into my home team Cowboys Stadium.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
