NARAL Vice President’s Statement on S.109, the deceptively titled “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act”

NARAL Vice President’s Statement on S.109, the deceptively titled “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act”

For Immediate Release: January 15, 2019

In advance of the Senate’s intended vote on a bill that attacks insurance coverage of abortion, NARAL Vice President Adrienne Kimmell issued the following statement:

“Government workers across the country are suffering from a continued shutdown with  no end in sight and what is the anti-choice GOP’s priority? Attacking women and our reproductive freedom. The GOP is continuing their dangerous crusade to eliminate all abortion coverage, particularly for women of color and lower income women. But the majority of Americans know the truth: every woman has a right to access essential healthcare, including abortion, no matter her zip code, her health insurance, or how much is in her bank account.

“As workers across the country are forced go without a paycheck, the GOP is spending their time brainstorming ways to rob women of their health care. The GOP needs to get back to work and help women, not insult them.”

The deceptively titled “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” would make the Hyde Amendment abortion coverage restrictions permanent, and go much further than current law by interfering in private insurance coverage of abortion. By restricting consumers’ ability to purchase comprehensive health plans that cover abortion, the bill would essentially eliminate abortion coverage across the entire insurance market.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”

Everyone should be able to decide if, when, how, and with whom they start or grow a family.
