After Donald Trump used today’s National Prayer Breakfast to attack abortion rights, and on the heels of his use of the State of the Union to do the same, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
”While he advanced devastating policies during his first two years in office, Donald Trump rarely talked about abortion. But now with the State of the Union and the National Prayer Breakfast, Donald Trump can’t seem to stop talking about abortion. So what has changed in the last few weeks? The answer is simple: his political standing.
“With his poll numbers in a free fall due to his government shutdown and the ongoing investigations into him, his family, his White House, his business, his foundation, his inaugural committee and his transition, Donald Trump’s newfound love of talking about abortion is all about throwing red meat to his shrinking political base in hopes of political survival. More than anything, he believes that pandering to the extreme right’s abortion obsession will help him fend off a primary from within his own party, showing just how politically weak he is two years into his term.
”Donald Trump has always been and will always be a President who caters to a small and shrinking portion of the American public.”
