NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Andy Beshear in his campaign for governor of Kentucky. Beshear is running in a competitive primary for the Democratic nomination for governor on Tuesday, May 21.

“Kentucky women and families deserve someone who will fight for them as governor, and Andy Beshear has always been there to defend Kentuckians’ rights and freedoms,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Now more than ever, as women’s fundamental freedoms are under attack, Kentuckians need their leaders to fight to protect reproductive rights. Kentucky is one of several states that passed an extreme ban on abortion this year, criminalizing abortion before many women even know they’re pregnant, in large part due to anti-choice governor Matt Bevin. Andy represents our strongest bet to defeat Bevin, bring real change to Frankfort, and protect the rights of all Kentucky families. NARAL is proud to endorse his candidacy.”

“NARAL is on the front lines of the battle for women to make their own health care decisions, and I deeply appreciate their trust and support,” said Beshear. “As attorney general, I’ve been the last line of defense for Kentucky women these last three years, and I have consistently stood up to Matt Bevin when he has tried to undermine and attack women’s rights. Others may say they are pro-choice, but I am the only candidate in this race who has done more than just talk when it comes to a woman’s right to choose.”

Andy Beshear is the current attorney general of Kentucky who has proudly stood up for reproductive freedom during his time in office. As attorney general, Beshear signed a letter to the Kentucky General Assembly decrying Kentucky Republicans’ proposed bans on abortion as unconstitutional. He previously refused to defend Kentucky’s 20-week ban on abortion when it was challenged in court and stood up to attempts by the General Assembly to close the state’s last remaining abortion clinic. If elected governor, he has pledged to stand up for women and families and protect reproductive freedom for everyone in the commonwealth.

One of Beshear’s competitors in the Democratic primary, House Minority Leader Rocky Adkins, voted for a bill to ban abortion at 11 weeks and has supported mandatory ultrasounds.
