NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Gina Ortiz Jones in her campaign to represent Texas’ 23rd Congressional District.

“Now more than ever, we need real champions for reproductive freedom like Gina Ortiz Jones fighting for us in Congress,” said Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “In my home state of Texas and across the country, women and families are under attack, with extreme new threats to reproductive freedom coming from Donald Trump and anti-choice Republicans like Congressman Will Hurd. Gina has spent her life serving her country and standing up for our basic rights. We’re proud to endorse her campaign because we know she will champion reproductive freedom and the rights of all of Texas’ women and families in Congress.”

“It’s this simple: I believe a woman should decide whether and when to have children; Will Hurd believes politicians know best and should make those decisions for women,” said Jones. “Reproductive health care is health care, and now more than ever we need someone in Congress who will stand with Texas women. I’m proud to have NARAL’s support as we work to protect a woman’s basic right to make decisions about her own body.”

Gina Ortiz Jones grew up in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating from college, Jones served overseas in Iraq as an intelligence officer in the Air Force before returning home to care for her mother who was diagnosed with cancer. Her career in national security included advising on military operations in Latin America and Africa, as well as leading portfolios in the Executive Office of the President that focused on the intersection of our economic and national security interests. In 2017, Jones ran for Texas’ 23rd Congressional District and narrowly lost by 926 votes (.4%). She is running to be the first out member of Congress from Texas, as well as the first female Iraq War veteran to serve in Congress from Texas. In Congress, she will be a champion for reproductive freedom and equal rights for all Americans.
