Louisiana state legislature turns its back on women and families

“Today, anti-choice politicians turned their backs on the women of Louisiana, who, now more than ever, need leaders who will fight for their reproductive freedom, not work to undermine it. The Louisiana state legislature is sending the message that Louisiana women shouldn’t have the ability to control their own futures and determine their own destinies.
“With Donald Trump and anti-choice Republicans launching an all-out assault on our most fundamental rights, Democrats have to show real leadership on reproductive freedom. If Governor John Bel Edwards signs this bill, he will be abandoning the the women of Louisiana while the country is watching. Women make up the heart and soul of the Democratic Party and our message is clear: reproductive freedom is not up for debate.”
Louisiana’s law is part of a new wave of extreme bans on abortion sweeping the country, restricting reproductive freedom and representing an all-out assault on abortion access. It comes on the heels of Alabama’s governor signing a total abortion ban into law, with no exceptions for rape or incest, and Georgia’s governor signing a bill that makes abortion illegal before many women even know they’re pregnant and that could throw doctors in jail and lead to women being investigated or prosecuted. Overall, thirty states have introduced, passed, or signed into law bans on abortion this year alone.
