NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Sara Gideon in her campaign for U.S. Senate in 2020 to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins.
Gideon has served as Speaker in the Maine State House since 2016 where she has been a leader in the fight for reproductive freedom. This includes her recent work to protect access by passing two bills removing unnecessary restrictions on healthcare providers performing abortion care services and ending coverage bans that blocked women from abortion care. Throughout her career, she has been an advocate for women and families and has consistently fought for the rights of all Mainers to make their own healthcare decisions.
“Sara Gideon has been leading the charge for reproductive freedom in Maine as Speaker of the House and we’re proud to endorse her campaign for Senate,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Mainers need someone who will fight for them in Washington and stand up to Mitch McConnell, Donald Trump and the Republican Party’s attacks on women and families. While Senator Collins infamously voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, the truth is she has supported many more of the president’s anti-choice nominees at every level of the federal judiciary. Mainers deserve a real fighter for reproductive freedom in the Senate and we’re thrilled to support a strong champion like Sara in this election.”
“I fought to expand Mainers’ access to health care because women and families should never be barred from the services they need based on where they live or how much money they have – and I’m so proud to have the support of an organization that has led this fight,” said Gideon. “As Senator, my focus will be on standing up for Mainers especially when it comes to protecting our rights and fighting for our health care.”
While Sara Gideon has been fighting for Maine women and families, incumbent Maine Senator Susan Collins has repeatedly turned her back on Mainers, voting to confirm nearly every one of Trump’s extreme and unqualified nominees to the federal bench. This includes votes for Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, even as Mainers opposed Kavanaugh’s confirmation by a double-digit margin.
