Tonight at the second Democratic presidential debate, abortion rights again played a significant role as multiple candidates stood up for reproductive freedom. Following the debate, NARAL President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement:

“Roe v. Wade is in jeopardy, endangering a long-standing guarantee that abortion should be safe and legal, despite overwhelming majority support for abortion rights. This moment calls for bold, creative, and robust plans to truly safeguard a woman’s ability to decide if, how and when to raise a family. We were glad to see several candidates, including Kirsten Gillibrand and Bernie Sanders, speak to how they will stand up for reproductive freedom and look forward to continuing to hear more from all the candidates on this critical issue.”

PBS Newshour/NPR/Marist poll found Republican attacks on reproductive freedom could drive independent voters to Democrats ahead of 2020. According to the poll, 77% of Americans support Roe v. Wade. Similarly, a CBS News poll showed that 63% of women Clinton voters say abortion issues will be very important to their presidential vote next year.
