NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of California Assemblywoman Christy Smith in her bid to represent California’s 25th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, with a special election slated for March 3, 2020. In 2018, with the support of NARAL Pro-Choice California, Assemblywoman Smith flipped a seat that had been Republican-held since 1978. Smith is seeking to fill the seat recently vacated by Rep. Katie Hill.
“With reproductive freedom under attack across the country, we need champions like Christy Smith fighting for our values in Congress now more than ever,” said Ilyse Hogue, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Voters sent a clear message in 2018 when they flipped this district blue and sent a Democratic majority to the House. Christy Smith has shown she will fight for the vast majority of Americans who believe women should be able to make their own decisions about pregnancy with the support of those they love and trust. We’re proud to endorse her for this crucial seat.”
“Christy Smith has dedicated her life to championing issues that are crucial to California women and families, and we’re proud to back her in this race,” said Shannon Hovis, Director of NARAL Pro-Choice California. “During Christy’s tenure in the California Assembly, she has proven herself to be a fierce advocate for reproductive freedom. The stakes are higher than ever, and we look forward to supporting Christy as she takes this fight to Congress.”
“I’m deeply grateful and honored to have earned the support of NARAL Pro-Choice America,” said Assemblywoman Christy Smith. “The incredible activists who run NARAL have uplifted the voices of so many inspiring pro-choice women who have run for higher office, and being one of them means the world to me. Throughout my life, I’ve fought to tear down barriers facing women, and in Congress, I’m resolutely committed to ensuring that every woman in this country has complete control of her own body and healthcare decisions. I look forward to working together to ensuring a 100% pro-choice America.”
Assemblywoman Smith has been a tireless advocate for California women and families throughout her life, previously serving as an educator and school board president.
